US President Donald Trump has pardoned his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani and other individuals accused in the 2020 election fraud case, ABC News reported.

According to US Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, Trump pardoned key figures who were allegedly involved in the plan to organize an alternative slate of electors and to "expose voting fraud" during the 2020 election.

The list includes Trump's former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, former New York Mayor; Mark Meadows, former White House Chief of Staff; Jeffrey Clark, former Assistant Attorney General; and Sidney Powell, retired attorney, as well as 72 other individuals allegedly linked to efforts to challenge the election results.

It is noted that the pardons are mainly symbolic, as none of those individuals had been charged with federal crimes, and Trump does not have the authority to pardon state-level charges.

Dozens of people on the list have been charged or faced charges related to investigations in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Nevada, although most of the cases have stalled.

The pardon, which Trump signed on Friday, November 7, applies to each of the president's co-defendants who were charged in Georgia in 2023 as part of a large-scale scheme to overturn the election results. Four of those pardoned had pleaded guilty.

"This proclamation ends a grave national injustice perpetrated upon the American people following the 2020 Presidential Election and continues the process of national reconciliation," the pardon statement said.

At the same time, the wording of the pardon clearly states that it does not apply to Trump himself.

2020 election case

Several US states filed criminal charges in connection with attempts by Donald Trump and his allies to influence the 2020 election results. Among the accused are former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, attorneys Rudy Giuliani, and Boris Epshteyn.

In April 2024, the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia, rejected Trump's motion to dismiss the charges of interference in the 2020 presidential election on the grounds of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
