US President Donald Trump has ordered the termination of all relations with Spain after it refused the United States access to its military bases, according to a statement from the White House Rapid Response 47 page on Twitter (X).
Additionally, the US president noted that he is also "not happy with the UK."
What led up to this
Spain refused to support the US operation against Iran, forcing American aircraft to be removed from Spanish bases.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles reported that the US withdrew about 12 KC-135 refueling aircraft from the Morón de la Frontera (Seville) and Rota (Cádiz) military bases, which had been intended to refuel fighter jets in the air.
According to her, the cooperation agreement with the US, which allows the presence of American troops at Spanish military bases, "must operate within the framework of international law." Robles emphasized that, at present, these are "unilateral actions without the support of a multilateral organization such as the UN, NATO, or the EU."
She added that over the weekend, the US refueling planes were relocated to other bases in Germany and France.
Spain’s stance on Iran
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that his country refuses to support the US and Israeli operation against Iran. He emphasized that unilateral military actions outside the UN Charter only escalate the "spiral of violence" and lack a clear strategic objective.
Additionally, last year, Spain declined US demands to raise NATO countries’ defense spending to 5% of GDP. The Spanish prime minister said that the continent’s future should be based not on militarization, but on unity and respect for international law.
