Trump on Greenland: We just want 'a piece of ice'

US President Donald Trump called Greenland "a piece of ice" that he wants to buy. He promised not to seize the island by force during his speech at the World Economic Forum.
Why Trump wants Greenland
Trump said that Greenland is a key strategic location between the United States, Russia, and China, and that it is not sufficiently protected.
Trump believes that Greenland does not have significant resources. For the United States, he said, Greenland is important primarily from a strategic security standpoint, both national and international. It could serve as a northern frontier, as the US is the northern frontier of Western civilization, according to the President.
"We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it. We've never asked for anything else, and we could have kept that piece of land, and we didn't. You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no, and we will remember," Trump said.
He believes that only the United States can protect this vast territory in order to keep Europe and the entire West safe. That is why he wants to discuss the issue of the acquisition of Greenland by the United States once again.
Use of force
Separately, the US President complained that he does too much for NATO, while America, in his view, is getting too little in return.
"We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that. I don't have to use force, I don't want to use force, I won't use force," Trump said.
According to Trump, Greenland was once part of the United States, but it was returned to Denmark after the Allies defeated Nazi Germany during World War II.
Trump and Greenland
US President Donald Trump has recently spoken frequently about how he wants Greenland, citing national security concerns as the reason.
At the same time, a few weeks ago, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the President is discussing several scenarios with his team for acquiring Greenland. According to her, the use of the military is not ruled out.
