Donald Trump Jr. criticized corruption in Ukraine and said his father may "walk away from Ukraine" if it does not make peace with Russia, reports Politico.
The eldest son of US President Donald Trump spoke at the Doha Forum, a major gathering of government officials and other international players. During his speech, Trump Jr. said Ukraine has long suffered from corruption in official ranks and added that graft fuels the war in both Moscow and Kyiv.
He also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Politico noted a recent corruption scandal and the resignation of Andriy Yermak as Head of the Office of the President.
"Because of the war, and because he's one of the great marketers of all time, Zelenskyy became a borderline deity, especially to the left, where he could do no wrong; he was beyond reproach," Trump Jr. said.
When asked if the US President could walk away from Ukraine, Trump Jr. responded, "I think he may."
"What's good about my father, and what’s unique about my father, is you don't know what he’s going to do. The fact that he's not predictable … forces everyone to actually deal in an intellectually honest capacity," he added.
US peace plan
In November, the US unveiled a new 28-point peace plan aimed at ending the war, though it sparked controversy for appearing to favor Russia.
Amid disputes surrounding the plan, Ukrainian and US delegations have spent the past two weeks finalizing it to make it more favorable to Kyiv.
On December 2, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner visited Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss the finalized plan.
A few days later, the Russian leader announced he had rejected part of the US proposals, adding that the document now contains 27 points divided into four packages. Earlier reports indicated that after talks with Ukraine, the plan had been reduced to 20 points.
According to The New York Times, one package addresses Ukrainian sovereignty, including limits on the size of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and missile ranges. Other packages cover territorial concessions, postwar economic cooperation between the US and Russia, and broader European security issues.
Yesterday, Zelenskyy held a phone call with Witkoff and Kushner. According to Axios, they discussed two key issues — territorial issues and security guarantees. While talks on territory remain complex, the parties have effectively reached an agreement on security guarantees.
