Trump said that Mojtaba Khamenei is "absolutely" involved in Iran's decision-making process, including decisions regarding a possible end to the war.
According to him, the ayatollah commands significant respect in the country following the deaths of his father, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and other family members in Israeli airstrikes at the start of the war.
"They have a lot of respect for him," the US President said.
Trump also did not rule out direct contact with Mojtaba Khamenei.
"I'd like to meet him," Trump said.
He added that he is open to dialogue with representatives of Iran's leadership.
"I’d love to meet everybody. I would like to meet him, and we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out," Trump stressed.
At the same time, he did not specify whether any preparations for potential talks are underway.
What is known about Mojtaba Khamenei?
Earlier, The New York Times reported that Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has been staying in a secure shelter under heavy protection following US and Israeli strikes. According to the outlet, he was injured and is undergoing treatment, including surgeries on his leg and arm.
Due to facial burns affecting his speech, he has reportedly stopped recording public video and audio statements.
Meanwhile, CNN, citing US intelligence sources, reported that despite his health issues, Khamenei may still play a role in shaping Tehran's negotiating strategy toward the United States.
According to intelligence assessments, Iran's new supreme leader is capable of influencing key decisions, although some analysts believe that other members of Iran's elite may also play leading roles in the negotiation process.
