Trump makes a statement about Witkoff’s meeting with Putin

The meeting between the US president’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Russian President Vladimir Putin was "very successful," according to US President Donald Trump on Truth Social.
"My Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, just had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Great progress was made!" Trump assured.
He specified that after the meeting, he informed some of the US’s European allies about its outcomes.
"Everyone agrees that this war must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come," the president added.
Witkoff’s meeting with Putin
The US president’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin today, August 6, in Moscow.
There were few details about the meeting — only Kremlin chief aide Yuri Ushakov spoke to journalists. He said that the key topic of discussion was Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Witkoff’s visit took place against the backdrop of Trump’s ultimatum to Moscow. The president promised to impose secondary tariffs and sanctions on Russia if it did not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine by August 8.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted that there might be "maybe positive, maybe not" news following Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.
At the same time, Reuters, citing a White House representative, reported that the US will still impose secondary sanctions on Russia. This will happen on August 8.
