Trump issues first statement after two-hour call with Putin

Russia and Ukraine should immediately begin negotiations on a ceasefire and end the war, US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
According to Trump, his conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin "went very well."
"Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war. The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of," the US President wrote.
He added that the "tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent."
"Russia wants to do large-scale trade with the United States when this catastrophic bloodbath is over, and I agree. There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is unlimited. Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on trade, in the process of rebuilding its country. Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin immediately," Trump wrote.
Trump also stated that he had already informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb during a joint phone call held immediately after his conversation with Putin.
Putin has also made a statement following the call with Trump. The Russian leader said that Russia is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum regarding a potential future peace deal.
Trump-Putin call
Today, US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin held a two-hour phone conversation, following Moscow’s refusal to accept an unconditional ceasefire with Ukraine.
During talks in Istanbul, Ukrainian and Russian delegations agreed to prepare written proposals outlining the terms of a potential truce.
According to media reports, the Kremlin is demanding that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. Only under this condition is Russia willing to agree to a ceasefire.
