US President Donald Trump has imposed 25 percent tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Iran, according to a statement by Trump.

"Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote.

It is noted that the US president intends in this way to influence the government of Iran, which is currently brutally suppressing protests in the country. He previously promised to help protesters through direct intervention.

According to media reports, Iran's key trading partners include India, China, and Türkiye.

This is not the first time a US president has resorted to such methods: Trump had previously imposed 50 percent tariffs on goods from India over that country's purchase of Russian oil.

What preceded

Since late December 2025, mass anti-government protests have erupted in Iran, later escalating into violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

After reports emerged of hundreds of people killed during protests in Iran over the weekend, Trump told journalists that Tehran was "beginning" to cross his red line.

As is known, Iranian officials condemned Trump's threats and warned of strikes on US bases and Israel if Trump follows through on his promises.

Meanwhile, according to two sources cited by Axios, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi contacted US representatives over the weekend to discuss protests.

Despite this, according to a number of outlets, Trump is leaning toward carrying out strikes on Iran as punishment for the regime's killing of protesters, though this is not his final decision, and other options are being considered.
