The United States has announced new trade restrictions. The country’s leader, Donald Trump, has particularly imposed a 35% tariff on Canada, according to Truth Social and a statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

According to Trump, the United States will introduce a 35% tariff on imports from Canada next month.

In his statement, Trump informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that the new rate will take effect on August 1 and will be raised further if Canada takes retaliatory measures.

Meanwhile, Carney has already assured that his government will continue to defend Canadian workers and businesses during negotiations with the US.

"Canada has made vital progress to stop the scourge of fentanyl in North America. We are committed to continuing to work with the United States to save lives and protect communities in both our countries," the Prime Minister stated.

In his statement, Trump also complained about what he claimed to be a flow of fentanyl from Canada, as well as tariff and non-tariff trade barriers that, in his words, harm American dairy producers and others.

At the same time, in an interview with NBC News, the US President said he plans to introduce general tariffs of 15% or 20% for most trading partners.

"We're just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it's 20% or 15%. We'll work that out now," Trump said.

Trump's tariffs

Back in April of this year, US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs against nearly every country in the world.

However, the American leader later "paused" his decision for 90 days to negotiate trade agreements with other countries.

At the same time, Trump promised that if no progress is made in negotiations with certain countries by July 9, he would reinstate the tariffs against them.

In particular, the American leader recently announced that the US will continue trade cooperation with Moldova, although some changes will be made.
