US may soon reinstate oil sanctions against Russia as oil supply conditions improve, states US President Donald Trump, according to The Guardian.

The US president was asked whether the US could strengthen anti-Russian sanctions.

"Well, soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing. So we took sanctions off, because obviously we’re not looking to impede the oil, so we’re in a position to do that soon … at some point," he said.

Easing of sanctions against Russia

In March, the US effectively suspended part of its sanctions against Russia. This referred to allowing the export of already loaded Russian oil and petroleum products.

Washington justified the move by saying that due to the war against Iran, the Strait of Hormuz was blocked, which significantly complicated oil supplies from Middle Eastern countries. Prices for "black gold" rose sharply.

Initially, the sanctions exemptions were supposed to last only 30 days, but the US authorities have extended them several times. Several countries requested such a waiver from the US.

Russia’s state budget, including military spending, depends heavily on oil sales.

This move by the US was also criticized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said that Russia, which regularly strikes civilian targets, does not deserve any easing of restrictions.
