US President Donald Trump did not impose the promised secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia because he was offered a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the American leader’s press conference.

Trump commented on his plans to impose sanctions and tariffs against buyers of Russian oil, which he never implemented.

"I was all set to do things far bigger than that, but I got a call that they'd like to meet. I’m going to see what they want to meet about," he said.

Trump added that he would like to see a ceasefire and the best deal for both sides.

"It takes two to tango, right? I'll have a meeting next week. I have a great relationship with him, considering the fact that I was not nice to him," the American leader noted.

Trump’s promise

Earlier, US President Donald Trump assured that if by August 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not start a ceasefire with Ukraine, he would impose secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia.

The American leader emphasized that Putin is "talking a lot of nonsense for Russia," since after the calls, he begins shelling peaceful cities in Ukraine.

Last week, rumors appeared in Western media that Trump would still impose secondary sanctions against Russia. But on August 8, this did not happen. Instead, the president announced his meeting with Putin.
