Trump expects peace deal between Ukraine and Russia in a few months - Reuters
Advisers to US President-elect Donald Trump believe that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia can be reached in the coming months. This differs from Trump's campaign statements, Reuters reports.
The agency, citing two anonymous advisers to the US president-elect, says that a timeframe of several months, perhaps a little longer, is being considered for reaching a peace agreement.
This timeline is different from what Trump said before the election. He claimed that he would end the war in a day.
Advisers have called Trump's promises a combination of campaign talk, a lack of understanding of the intractability of the conflict, and the time needed to set up a new administration.
Such assessments coincide with the statement of the future special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Colledge. In an interview with Fox News last week, he said that he would like to find a solution to the war within 100 days of Donald Trump's inauguration.
Trump's position on Ukraine
On the eve of the election, Donald Trump claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine in one day as president of the United States. He also claimed earlier that he could end the war before returning to the White House.
Trump decides to appoint a special representative for Ukraine and Russia. The position will be held by retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg. Kellogg is expected to visit Ukraine after Trump's inauguration.
In addition, Trump has been talking about a peace plan for Ukraine, but it has not yet been officially presented. The media published several versions of a possible peace plan. Some versions included the postponement of NATO membership and territorial concessions.
