Ukrainian drone strikes on airfields deep inside Russia have reignited Donald Trump’s long-standing frustration with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Once again, the White House is facing renewed debate over whether the US should continue backing Ukraine, reports The Atlantic.

Indeed, the recent Ukrainian drone strike on airfields in Russia has sparked a loud reaction in the US. Officials there warned that the attack could escalate the conflict and push the world closer to a Third World War.

According to American media, despite the impressive impact and positive reception in Ukraine, Donald Trump has privately expressed anger over the strike and voiced doubts about the wisdom of continuing support for Kyiv.

Trump is once again unhappy with Zelenskyy

According to advisors and officials close to Trump, the former US president has long been skeptical of Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump was taken aback by the boldness of the strikes and said they were overly provocative, especially given the potential peace talks planned in Istanbul.

He believes Zelenskyy would be better off focusing on negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, rather than making moves that escalate the conflict.

Moreover, voices inside the White House have repeatedly said that President Zelenskyy is too emotional and could drag the world into a Third World War. That’s why throughout the war, Trump has referred to Zelenskyy as a bad actor and a hothead.

White House is discussing cutting aid to Ukraine

After the strikes on Russian airfields, Trump began exploring options to reshape the US strategy. These include possible cuts to Ukraine’s funding, new restrictions on military assistance, or even diplomatic pressure on Kyiv to force talks with the Kremlin. At the same time, sources say Trump was struck by the boldness of the attack but remains convinced that such actions don’t bring peace - they only increase the risk of global escalation.

Shifting priorities

In a post on Truth Social, Trump hinted at a desire to redirect diplomatic efforts away from Ukraine toward resolving the situation with Iran. He even suggested that Putin is willing to help end the nuclear crisis. This signals that the Ukraine issue might take a backseat to other global priorities.

During a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House, Trump stated he would take a very tough stance if Russia crossed any red lines.

Additionally, Trump confirmed that the US is considering imposing sanctions on Russia.
