US President Donald Trump considers the statements of Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the illegitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to be nonsense, the American leader said during a cabinet meeting at the White House.

Trump was asked how he reacts to statements by Putin and his entourage about the alleged impossibility of signing a peace agreement with Ukraine due to the so-called illegitimacy of Zelenskyy.

"Doesn't matter what they say (the Russians – ed.). Everybody's posturing. It's all bulls, ok? Everybody's posturing," said the US president.

Russian statements on the illegitimacy of Zelenskyy

In an interview with NBC News, Lavrov said that Moscow recognizes Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the de facto head of Ukraine and is ready to meet with him.

At the same time, he again raised the issue of the alleged illegitimacy of the Ukrainian president, emphasizing that the signing of legal documents must be carried out only by a legitimate person.

According to him, under the Constitution of Ukraine, Zelenskyy currently does not meet this requirement.

Lavrov hinted that Putin allegedly would not sign a peace agreement because of the illegitimacy of the president of Ukraine.

Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha called Lavrov's words about the alleged illegitimacy of Zelenskyy absurd.

"There is nothing more absurd than a lecture on legitimacy from a person who has sat in his chair for 21 years, serving someone who has ruled for over 25 years. He has no legitimacy to talk about legitimacy," Sybiha noted.
