US President Donald Trump will decide on imposing secondary sanctions within the next 24 to 36 hours.

This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the official’s interview with Fox News.

When asked about the introduction of secondary sanctions against Russia, which are scheduled to be imposed on Friday, the head of US diplomacy said that President Trump would decide on the matter within the next 24 to 36 hours.

Regarding the end of the war, he stated that they now ''have a better understanding'' of the conditions under which Russia might agree to end the conflict.

Trump's deadline

On July 29, US President Donald Trump gave Vladimir Putin a 10-day deadline, until August 8, to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.

If Russia refuses to negotiate, the US will impose secondary sanctions.

At the same time, Washington has intensified diplomatic talks with the Kremlin. On Wednesday, August 6, US special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow. Following his meeting with Putin, Trump announced "significant progress" in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Sources cited by Reuters reported that the US is still expected to impose secondary sanctions on Russia starting August 8.
