Trump decides to hold rally at site of first assassination attempt on him in Pennsylvania
US presidential candidate Donald Trump plans to hold a rally on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, where an assassination attempt on his life occurred in July. Trump's campaign is positioning the event as a tribute to the American spirit, reports the Associated Press.
"I'll probably start with the words: "As I was saying…...'" Trump joked, referencing the abrupt end of the July rally in Butler when gunshots rang out, prompting security to escort him off the stage.
Trump's campaign predicts that tens of thousands of people will attend the event. Local hotels and motels are reportedly already full, with some rally participants arriving as early as Friday.
"President Trump looks forward to returning to Butler, Pennsylvania to honor the victims from that tragic day. The willingness of Pennsylvanians to join President Trump in his return to Butler represents the strength and resiliency of the American people," stated campaign representative Karoline Leavitt.
Trump's plane flew over the event site before his arrival, eliciting cheers from his supporters below.
An investigation by the US Secret Service revealed communication gaps and a lack of caution leading up to the July assassination attempt on Trump during the rally in Butler.
