A framework agreement on the purchase of Greenland by the United States is reportedly almost finalized, US President Donald Trump said this while speaking with journalists.
"We have started the negotiations, and I think it's pretty well agreed to. I mean, they want us to do it. I think it's going to be a good deal for everyone. It is a very important deal, actually, from a national security point of view," Trump said.
Earlier, Trump spoke about a framework agreement on the purchase of Greenland, but the country's Minister for Economic Affairs, Naaja Nathanielsen, effectively denied the White House’s claims, saying that no agreement exists and that dialogue must first begin.
Trump's claims over Greenland
The situation around Greenland escalated after US President Donald Trump announced his intention to buy the island for $700 billion.
The American president justified the proposal as a strategic necessity, arguing that Denmark is unable to protect the region from being "surrounded" by Russian and Chinese fleets.
At present, the parties are holding talks on Greenland with the aim of not violating its sovereignty. The United States, Copenhagen, and representatives of the island are seeking to reach an agreement on strengthening defense in the Arctic — an issue that concerned Trump and reportedly became the main reason behind his claims.
These statements have caused concern in Europe and among NATO allies, who have emphasized the need to respect Denmark’s territorial integrity and avoid confrontation in the Arctic region.
