Lake Ontario, named after the Canadian province, could soon be renamed "Lake America," the US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, according to the Associated Press.

Lake Ontario lies on the border between the United States and Canada.

"The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America ‌in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer," Trump wrote.

The president later called Canadians "clowns" whom "someone should line up."

US-Canada relations

Bilateral trade talks between Canada and the United States have currently broken down. The US has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods worth approximately $20 billion.

Higher tariffs apply to:

  • Alcohol
  • Electrical equipment
  • Hockey equipment from Canada

RBC-Ukraine previously reported that Trump had sharply criticized trade and economic relations with Canada and called for an end to the current form of cooperation.

It was also reported that trade talks between the United States and Canada ended without an agreement. Washington subsequently imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods, while Ottawa pledged to respond with similar measures.

In addition, the new tariffs on Canada are being imposed under Section 338 of the US Tariff Act of 1930. The provision allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% on imports from a foreign country in response to unequal taxation or discriminatory trade practices.
