Trump asks court to postpone sentencing in hush money case
The attorneys of Republican nominee Donald Trump asked the judge to postpone sentencing in the New York hush money case after the presidential election in November, according to CNN.
Media cites the letter, in which Trump’s attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove say there is “no valid countervailing reason for the Court to keep the current sentencing date” and “no basis for continuing to rush.”
Earlier, Trump tried to delay the sentencing and remove Judge Juan Merchan from the trial. But the judge denied these objections, saying he would rule on this case.
“As has been the standard throughout the pendency of this case, the court will continue to base its rulings on the evidence and the law, without fear or favor, casting aside undue influence,” Merchan said in his decision.
The following court meeting is scheduled for September 18.
Trump hush money case
In May 2024, Trump was convicted of falsifying business records to cover up a payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
The prosecution states that Trump, through his lawyer Michael Cohen, paid $130,000 to the porn star "for silence." Later on, the New York prosecutor's office became interested in the origin of these funds, which led to the beginning of the investigation.
On July 2, Judge Juan Merchan postponed the verdict for Trump in the hush money case till September.
On August 6, the US Supreme Court refuses to suspend Trump's sentence in the hush money case.
