US President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy for Greenland, Reuters reports.

"Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World," Trump said.

Landry, who took office as Louisiana governor in January 2024, thanked Trump and said it was a great honor to serve in this voluntary role to make Greenland part of the United States.

Although the United States and Greenland pledged earlier this month to demonstrate “mutual respect,” Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said US comments about Greenland have created uncertainty among local residents and stressed the need for open dialogue with Washington.

Denmark’s response

US President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland demonstrates America’s continued interest in the Arctic island.

"We insist that everyone – including the US – must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said.

Background

Trump attempted to purchase Greenland near the end of his first term, but Denmark rejected the idea — just as it did 80 years ago. After returning to the White House in 2025, he once again stated that the United States must establish control over the island for security reasons.

Previously, in August 2025, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused members of Trump’s inner circle of attempting to interfere in Greenland’s political processes. In October, she noted that the US president appeared to have cooled on the issue, but warned that he could return to it.

Denmark has since strengthened the island’s defenses following renewed interest from Trump.
