Trump administration to impose 25% tariff on imported beer and aluminum cans

The administration of US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on imported beer and aluminum cans. The decision will come into force this week, according to the US Department of Commerce's Federal Register and Reuters.
According to the Federal Register, tariffs on beer and empty aluminum cans will be applied starting at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday, April 4.
The tariff revision notice mentions only the tariff code for malt beer, without specifying a subcode for beer imported in glass containers.
According to the US Census Bureau, this move will be a "substantial hit" for beer imports, which exceeded $7.5 billion in 2024. Currently, Mexico dominates US beer imports ($6.3 billion last year), followed by:
-
The Netherlands ($683 million)
-
Ireland ($192 million)
-
Canada ($73 million)
US tariffs
Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to impose tariffs on goods from the European Union.
His administration has already introduced tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, along with higher tariffs on automobiles, which will take effect on April 3.
Meanwhile, the EU has announced a decisive plan for countermeasures against the tariffs imposed and planned by Trump.
Today, reports indicate that Trump is preparing to announce the most extensive US trade restrictions in a century.
This could create unpredictable economic risks. More details can be found in the material by RBC-Ukraine.
