'True American original': Trump delivers emotional tribute at Sen. Lindsey Graham's funeral

US President Donald Trump delivered a powerful eulogy at the funeral of Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, known for his hardline stance against Russia, including his role in drafting the "bone-crushing" sanctions against Moscow, CBS News reports.
The US president described Lindsey Graham as a "true American original" and a "beloved friend," calling him one of the greatest lawmakers in the nation's history.
Trump also noted that the late senator grew up in a rural town in South Carolina but became a "force to be reckoned with all over the world."
"For more than 30 years, nothing of consequence happened in this capital without Lindsey Graham knowing about it," the president said.
"He was a man who gave America the full measure of his good and mighty heart until that heart itself just gave out," the White House chief added.
The US president also recalled that their relationship began as a fierce political rivalry during the 2016 presidential campaign before evolving into a close friendship.
According to Trump, he and Graham often played golf together, and the senator had a rare ability to connect with people regardless of their political views.
"Above all, Lindsey Graham believed in a strong America... He wanted a strong America. He had unwavering faith in the righteousness of American power and prayer. And he was extremely hawkish. I will tell you, he never saw a war that he didn't like … but he wanted it for the good of our country," the US leader said.
Lindsey Graham's funeral
Lindsey Graham's funeral service was held at the Washington National Cathedral. In addition to Trump, US Vice President JD Vance and Senate Majority Leader John Thune delivered remarks.
Among those in attendance were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The senator died on July 11 at the age of 71. He was one of the authors of a bill imposing tough sanctions on Russia, including 500% tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, and other energy resources. Following his death, the bill was named in his honor.
