Egg coffee is a beverage that combines strong coffee with a mixture of egg yolk. Its creamy texture and sweet taste have already made it a culinary trend.
Everyday Health explains whether it is actually healthy.
What is egg coffee
Egg coffee is a mixture of strong black coffee and egg yolk beaten with sugar or condensed milk.
The drink can be served hot or cold and is consumed with a spoon. Its taste is more like a dessert such as custard than coffee.
Basic preparation:
- Beat egg yolks with about one tablespoon of condensed milk (or sugar) until pale yellow
- Brew coffee or espresso
- Pour the egg mixture over the coffee
Is it healthy?
Black coffee contains magnesium, vitamin B2, and beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols. Drinking black coffee is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and certain types of cancer.
Egg coffee, however, can contain a lot of sugar, which may increase the risk of prediabetes or diabetes.
Adding 1 tablespoon of sugar equals about 12 g of added sugar, which is nearly half the recommended daily limit for women and one-third for men.
Whole eggs are a good source of protein and contain nutrients such as choline, vitamin D, and B12. However, egg yolks are high in cholesterol.
Who should avoid it
People with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, adults over 65, and children under 5 should especially avoid egg coffee.
This drink should be treated as a dessert, not a regular morning beverage.
Raw or undercooked eggs may carry Salmonella bacteria and can cause illness.
If you decide to prepare egg coffee, it is better to use pasteurized eggs.
