When energy runs low, many reach for either a cup of coffee or an energy drink. Both promise a quick boost, but do they affect the body in the same way, and which choice really has hidden consequences, according to Health.
Caffeine content
Coffee and energy drinks can contain different amounts of caffeine, which affects their impact on energy levels. The caffeine content in coffee varies depending on the brewing method and type of beans, but a standard 225 ml cup typically contains 113–247 mg of caffeine.
Standard energy drinks can contain 70–240 mg of caffeine.
Impact on heart health
Consuming too much caffeine can raise blood pressure and heart rate, and affect heart rhythm. This risk is especially high for children, as their cardiovascular and nervous systems are still developing.
Moderate coffee consumption may support heart health, while excessive intake increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. The brewing method also influences its effects.
Energy drinks often contain additional ingredients such as guarana, sugar, B vitamins, and other compounds that boost energy. They can also interact with alcohol or prescription/illegal drugs, potentially causing negative health effects.
Risks of excessive consumption
Healthy adults should limit total daily caffeine intake to 400 mg. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consume about half this amount (around 200 mg).
Excessive caffeine can lead to:
- Rapid heartbeat;
- High blood pressure;
- Sleep problems;
- Anxiety or nervousness;
- Nausea or stomach upset;
- Headaches.
For daily use, coffee is generally the better choice, as it has a simpler composition and provides a more stable effect. Energy drinks can give a quick boost, but should not be consumed regularly.
