You can improve brain health and prevent cognitive decline with a simple exercise that takes one minute to perform. This method helps you stay active for a long time, reports Daily Express.

What is good for the brain

As we age, our memory and ability to perceive new information changes. At a moderate level, this is a normal sign of aging, while at a more severe level, it can be caused by dementia.

Psychologist Laura Vera recommends participating in a variety of mental tasks. She compared mental exercises to the effects on the body's muscles, similar to physical activity.

"If we always do the same mental activity, such as solving the same puzzles, the brain stops working. That's why it's important to change things up, introduce new challenges, and do exercises that require a little more effort," she said.

What exercise to do

One of the easiest and most effective memory-boosting exercises Laura shared is something as simple as watching a window for one minute.

This exercise, which everyone can do in their daily life, stimulates photographic memory.

The idea is to stop in front of a shop window and mentally note all the details: the products, for example, the location of the items, the prices. Then we must go and try to recall all these details.

According to Laura, this simple exercise activates neural connections and improves the ability to store visual information. This is not to say that exercise is not important.

To improve brain health, you should do regular exercise. They increase the oxygenation of the brain, which contributes to its proper functioning. With every movement, the brain gets a boost that allows it to stay active and ready to learn and memorize.

A healthy sleep schedule is also important. That's because when we don't sleep well, our memory deteriorates the next day.

To reduce the risk of dementia, you need to:

  • balance nutrition
  • maintain a healthy weight
  • regularly exercise
  • abstain from alcohol
  • quit smoking
  • maintain blood pressure at a healthy level
  • maintain a healthy social life
