A New Jersey nutritionist says that almonds are the best late-night snack that won't increase blood sugar, the main source of energy for your body, according to Eating Well.

Why are almonds a good idea in the evening

The vegetable protein in almonds helps slow digestion and provides a steady release of energy throughout the night, keeping blood sugar levels in the ideal range. This was told by registered dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade.

A 1-ounce serving of almonds, or about 23 nuts, contains 164 calories and 6 grams of carbohydrates.

The nuts also contain 3.5 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 14 grams of fat, including 9 grams of monounsaturated fat.

Why almonds are good for health

The healthy monounsaturated fats in almonds help slow the emptying of the stomach for more stable blood sugar levels and appetite.

The nuts are also rich in fiber, which helps slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, and minerals such as magnesium, which helps balance blood sugar levels.

A 2023 study found that snacking on a handful of almonds 30 minutes before a meal improved blood sugar control in people with higher-than-normal levels.

It should be noted that about 60% of American adults admit to snacking after 8 p.m., according to a 2021 survey conducted by the International Food Information Council.
