Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski opposed the idea of fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, Sikorski’s statement in an interview with RMF24.

The Polish minister was asked about the position of Hungary’s future prime minister Péter Magyar, who stated that he does not support the idea of fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Sikorski agreed with Magyar’s remarks, saying that Poland’s position is identical.

In his view, Ukraine must go through the full process of European integration, as Poland once did.

"He is saying what is also our position. The European Commission has come up with the idea of accelerated membership. That will not happen. We believe Ukraine must fulfill all the conditions, just as we had to. And, of course, there will be difficult chapters in the negotiations, such as agriculture or transport," the Polish foreign minister said.

Ukraine’s EU accession date

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that the Ukrainian authorities would do everything to ensure the country is ready for EU membership by 2027.

Kyiv has called on Brussels to set January 1, 2027, as the date of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Recently, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that Ukraine’s accession to the EU in 2027 is impossible.

According to her, the membership process depends on two specific factors — achieving peace and implementing reforms.

The governments of several EU countries do not support active discussion or acceleration of new members’ accession, including Ukraine. Among these states are France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy.

At the same time, it was previously reported that the European Union could adopt a clear model for Ukraine’s accession to the bloc as early as May this year.
