US President Donald Trump said that remarks by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen indicating the island’s intention to remain in union with Denmark could become "a big problem" for him, according to a White House broadcast.

When asked by reporters whether he considered final the statement by Greenland’s prime minister that the island intends to remain in union with Denmark, US President Donald Trump responded by questioning who had made such remarks.

After journalists clarified that the statement had been voiced by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Trump said he did not know who the politician was and claimed he had no information about him. At the same time, the US leader warned that the Greenlandic prime minister could face "a big problem," stressing that he disagrees with the position taken by the island’s leadership.

"Well, that's their problem. That's their problem. I disagree with him. I don't know who he is. Don't know anything about him, but that's going to be a big problem for him," Trump concluded.

Trump's claims on Greenland

Trump has recently made a series of statements outlining territorial ambitions toward several countries following what he described as a successful US operation in Venezuela. Among those mentioned, alongside Cuba, Mexico, and even Canada, was Greenland, which currently enjoys autonomous status within the Danish realm.

Trump has continued to press the issue despite Denmark’s refusal to consider transferring control of the island to Washington, as well as opposition from Greenland’s authorities and residents.

Moreover, on January 12, a bill proposing the "annexation of Greenland" was introduced in the US Congress. The draft legislation would authorize Trump to take any steps deemed necessary to acquire Greenland and initiate its incorporation into the United States.

Further details on why Trump’s plans regarding the island could pose broader global risks are available in a separate report by RBC-Ukraine.
