Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Greenland is not for sale and spoke out in defense of the international order during a briefing with journalists ahead of important talks with the US government and allied countries.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and that national borders cannot be changed by force. She stressed that this is not just an issue for the island or the Kingdom of Denmark, but a fundamental question of international law.
"Borders cannot be changed by force, nations cannot be bought, and small countries should not fear stronger ones," Frederiksen said.
She noted that Denmark is ready to cooperate with the US and other allies on security matters and will reiterate this position at the upcoming meeting with the American delegation.
"We say this together with our allies in the North, in Europe, and around the world to protect the democratic global order established by previous generations," the Prime Minister added.
In this way, Denmark is demonstrating its determination to defend Greenland’s territorial integrity and uphold the principles of international law in response to potential attempts by stronger powers to pressure smaller states.
US interest in Greenland
After the US conducted an operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Donald Trump stated that he wants Greenland.
The American leader believes that if the island does not become part of the US, it could fall under the control of Russia or China.
On Monday, January 12, a bill on the annexation of Greenland was introduced in the US Congress. The document would authorize President Trump to take such steps as may be necessary to acquire Greenland and begin the process of its incorporation into the United States.
Previously, US special envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry accused Denmark of seizing the island after World War II.
