Popular marketplaces such as Temu and AliExpress attract users with low prices, but serious risks often lie behind them. European regulators have already drawn attention to the issue, and experts warn that some products may be dangerous to health.

RBC-Ukraine explains which goods from Temu and AliExpress you should avoid buying, even if they are very cheap.

Why Temu is being investigated in Europe

In 2025, the European Commission launched an investigation into Temu’s operations under the Digital Services Act (DSA). Regulators are interested in whether prohibited or dangerous goods are being sold on the platform and how effectively the service monitors them.

In addition, Temu has repeatedly been criticized for weak product quality control and potential risks to consumers. Similar claims were previously made against AliExpress as well.

According to The Guardian, cases have already been recorded in the EU of products being sold that do not meet safety standards or contain hazardous substances.

Which products may be dangerous

Children’s toys and accessories

Experts have found cases where toys contained small parts that easily detach. This creates a choking hazard for children. Toxic paints or materials have also been found in some products.

Cosmetics with unknown ingredients

EU reports mention cosmetic products containing banned components. In particular, the substance Lilial has been banned in Europe due to potential risks to reproductive health. Such products may cause allergies or more serious consequences.

Clothing and textiles

Some items may contain hazardous chemical dyes. There have also been cases of clothing with structural defects, such as drawstrings that do not meet safety standards and may cause injury.

Sunglasses

A particular risk comes from sunglasses without proper UV protection. They create a false sense of safety but can actually harm the eyes more than wearing none at all.

Kitchen and food-contact products

Cheap plastic or coatings may release harmful substances when heated or in contact with food. This is especially dangerous with regular use.

Electronics and small gadgets

Poor build quality can lead to overheating, short circuits, or even fires. This is especially true for chargers and batteries.

What experts and regulators say

EU Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath said he was shocked by the level of danger of some goods entering the market through online platforms.

The EU Safety Gate system, which monitors dangerous products in the EU, records thousands of cases every year. A significant share involves cosmetics, toys, and electrical appliances.

At the same time, platforms themselves claim they are working to improve control. Temu, in particular, says it cooperates with international certification organizations and uses seller verification systems.

How to protect yourself

Experts from Choice advise not to rely on price alone. Before purchasing, it is important to check product descriptions, ingredients, and certifications. This is especially important for items that come into contact with skin, food, or are used by children.

It is also better to avoid products without a clearly stated manufacturer or composition. If a product seems suspiciously cheap, it may indicate low quality or lack of proper control.
