US President Donald Trump said he could impose tariffs on Ukraine and Russia if the countries fail to reach a peace deal. However, he questioned whether the idea would work.
According to Trump, tariffs helped the United States end five wars. The White House chief suggested that Washington might want to do the same with Ukraine and Russia.
"Tariffs helped us end eight wars, five of these eight because of trading tariffs. I've said: 'If you continue to fight, we're going to put two hundred percent tariffs on both of you.' And amazing, they stopped the war. Probably, we should immediately do the same with Ukraine and Russia. I've even never thought about that," the US president said.
However, he promptly questioned whether tariffs would force Russia to end its war against Ukraine. Trump explained that the United States doesn't trade enough with Kyiv and Moscow for such a measure to matter.
"But we don't buy enough to do it for them, so it doesn't work so," the White House chief concluded.
