Taiwan has decided to join the international coalition funding Ukraine’s demining efforts, led by Lithuania and Iceland. The country will contribute $2 million to the fund, according to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.

Representatives of Lithuania’s Ministry of Defense held talks with the Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius regarding support for Ukraine, with a special focus on demining operations.

"During the meeting, Taiwan expressed its intention to contribute to Lithuania's efforts in demining Ukraine and to donate $2 million to the Coalition Fund," the Lithuanian Ministry stated.

During the talks, the importance of cooperation between coalition member countries and Taiwan was emphasized, as "this is one of the ways for democratic societies to work together on concrete initiatives that contribute to Ukraine’s security and recovery."

"Taiwan and Lithuania unanimously recognize the importance and necessity of cooperation in addressing demining efforts in Ukraine. Both sides acknowledged that unexploded remnants of war pose a serious threat to civilian safety and remain a major obstacle to the socio-economic progress of regions affected by the conflict," the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense stated.

Demining Ukraine

Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy previously reported that the country needed $29.8 billion to clear territories affected by the war. However, this need has decreased due to progress in removing mines and unexploded ordnance from Ukrainian land.

In February 2024, as part of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a Demining Coalition was established - one of eight capability coalitions, led and coordinated by Lithuania and Iceland. The coalition now includes 22 countries.

Recently, Ukraine and Japan signed a $58 million agreement for the emergency recovery of Ukrainian territory, with part of the funds allocated specifically for demining efforts.
