Türkiye seeks to purchase nearly half a dozen Typhoon fighter jets
Türkish Defense Minister Yashar Guler has announced that Istanbul is focused on negotiations for the purchase of 40 fourth-generation multi-role Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, according to TRT Haber.
It is noted that Guler held negotiations with the UK Defense Secretary regarding the current situation of Türkey's procurement of fighter jets.
"We are resolving the Eurofighter procurement issue through England," stated Guler.
He added that since the procurement and modernization process of the F16 is ongoing, the only aircraft Istanbul is focusing on is the Typhoon.
"We want to purchase 40 Eurofighter jets, 20 in the first stage and 20 later. We have already submitted a request to purchase the top model of the aircraft," said the Türkish Ministry of Defense.
Türkey's attempts to purchase Typhoon
On November 16, Bloomberg reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is likely to block Türkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's request to purchase Eurofighter Typhoon fighters due to diplomatic tensions between NATO allies.
The tension reportedly arose due to Istanbul's purchase of air defense systems from Russia, its military campaign against Kurdish forces in Syria, and delays in the ratification of Sweden's NATO membership.
Later, the Turkish Minister of Defense stated an attempt to negotiate the purchase of fighters from Germany through Spain and the United Kingdom.
