Türkiye may deploy its F-16 fighter jets to Northern Cyprus, according to Reuters.
The development of a corresponding plan to strengthen security in the Eastern Mediterranean became known on March 7, 2026.
According to a source in the Turkish Ministry of Defense, Ankara is exploring the possibility of permanently or temporarily basing combat aircraft on the island. This step is part of a phased plan aimed at ensuring the security of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The decision on a possible deployment of F-16s comes amid rising conflicts in the Mediterranean region, prompting Ankara to review its defense strategy.
The initiative is currently under discussion within the defense ministry.
If approved, the presence of Turkish fighter jets in Cyprus could significantly alter the regional balance of power. Any deployment of combat aircraft directly affects the security landscape of NATO and Mediterranean countries.
Türkiye's aviation potential
The Turkish Air Force has recently been actively showcasing the strength of its fleet. Notably, the Turkish Stars aerobatic team in F-16s recently became a highlight of the Teknofest airshow in Istanbul, demonstrating the high combat readiness of both aircraft and pilots.
It is worth noting that Türkiye has one of the largest F-16 fighter jet fleets in the world. According to open sources, the Turkish Air Force operates approximately 270 F‑16C/D fighters of various blocks (30/40/50), forming the core of its combat group.
Earlier reports indicated that on Monday, December 15, Turkish F-16s shot down a drone approaching the country’s airspace over the Black Sea.
Recently, an F-16 fighter jet also crashed onto a busy highway in Türkiye.
