Hungary will not change its position on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, even if Russia supposedly does not object to it, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated on Facebook.

Szijjártó commented on the words of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said it was unclear why Hungary rejects Ukraine’s EU membership since even Russia does not oppose it.

"Once again, Zelenskyy judges by his own standards. Unlike him, our position is not dictated from abroad. We do not care what Moscow thinks about Ukraine’s EU membership. We care about what Hungarians think," the minister wrote.

According to him, Hungarians supposedly do not want Ukraine to be part of the EU.

"They don’t want Ukrainians to destroy our farmers, our labor market, and our security! So while President Zelenskyy may naively trust the Russians, we will not support Ukraine’s accession to the EU!" Szijjártó stated.

What Zelenskyy said

Today, during a press conference with European Council President António Costa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is fulfilling all requirements for joining the European Union, but the process continues to be blocked by Hungary.

Zelenskyy stressed that in a situation where even Russian President Vladimir Putin does not object to Ukraine’s EU membership, the position of "friends of Russia," including Hungary, on this issue seems strange.

"At last, we hear a signal from Russia that they are already accepting Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. It is a pity that they perceive reality with such a delay. Since 2013, Russia has been coming to this simple conclusion, but now some other big friends of Russia in Europe also need to hear it. If even Putin does not object, then the positions of certain countries, especially Hungary, regarding the negotiation clusters look really strange," Zelenskyy said.
