Switzerland aims to host peace summit in mid-June: Details
Switzerland intends to host a Global Peace Summit on the war in Ukraine in mid-June. Up to 100 countries are expected to participate in the event, Bloomberg reports.
Sources reported that the peace summit could take place on June 16-17.
However, it is not yet clear how many leaders will be present at this meeting. The participation of China has become a key point of contention.
Bloomberg informs that for Switzerland, China's participation will be crucial, as Bern wants to make this initiative trustworthy. Ukraine's allies consider China's presence important for the success of the meeting due to the influence Beijing has on Moscow.
Negotiations
A representative of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed that the date and venue of the conference are yet to be determined.
Additionally, the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the publication that it is important to listen to countries in the global South, which will play a key role in ultimately involving Russia in this process.
Therefore, Swiss diplomats are in close contact with China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia.
Where the summit might take place
Bloomberg reports that the Global Peace Summit is expected to occur after four meetings of national security advisers, which Ukraine has organized to secure support for the peace formula.
The last of these meetings took place in Davos earlier this year. According to Bloomberg sources, if the summit does take place, it could be held in the city of Lucerne.
"An official announcement from the Swiss cabinet could come as early as April 10," the source added.
Global peace summit
During his speech at the G20 summit in November 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed the peace formula to halt Russia's full-scale invasion.
In January 2024, Ukraine and Switzerland began preparations for the Global peace summit, where the proposed peace formula will be discussed. The meeting will be held at the level of heads of state, with over 80 countries and international institutions involved in its preparation.
Previously, the Head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak, stated that Russia could be invited to the Global peace summit organized by Ukraine. However, its participation would only be possible at the second summit.
Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with the Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro. During the conversation, the parties discussed, among other things, the preparation for the upcoming first Global peace summit.
