The Swedish government has approved the allocation of an additional SEK 500 million (almost EUR 44 million) to support heating and electricity supply in Ukraine, according to the press service of the Swedish government.

“Today, the Government is presenting an additional SEK 500 million in support for heating and electricity supply in Ukraine. Russia is increasingly targeting important energy infrastructure with its attacks. This new support will go towards generating electricity for around 185,000 people and help keep Ukraine’s society, economy and businesses going,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell.

As noted, the funds allocated by Sweden will finance the installation of two gas turbines for electricity generation. The production facilities will be protected in such a way as to minimize the destructive effects of Russian attacks.

The project will be implemented by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency in cooperation with the Ukrainian side and international financial institutions. The goal is for this production facility to start operating in 2025.

Swedish assistance to Ukraine

In May, the Swedish government announced a new military aid package for Ukraine. Its value exceeded SEK 13 million ($1.3 billion).

Ukraine and Sweden also signed a bilateral agreement on security guarantees.

According to the document, in 2024-2026, Sweden will provide Ukraine with military assistance worth about 6.5 billion euros, which is approximately 2.2 billion euros per year. The amount of assistance will increase over the ten-year term of the agreement.

In addition, military support for Ukraine includes aviation and air defense, armored vehicles, artillery, maritime security, mine clearance assistance, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
