Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has strategically lost and that Ukraine will win the war, Bild reports.
"I won’t give you advice, but I believe you will win this war, and I say this because Putin has strategically lost," Stubb said in response to a question from a Ukrainian journalist.
He explained that Putin wanted to make Ukraine Russian, but "it became European." He tried to prevent NATO expansion, yet Finland and Sweden have now joined.
Stubb also noted that Putin aimed to keep Russia’s defense spending low, but now it is rising to five percent.
"Russia is losing militarily: at the start of the war, Russia occupied 12 percent of Ukrainian territory. Over the last two years, that fell to eight percent, and by December it was one percent. Additionally, Ukraine has killed 34,000 Russian soldiers, whom they were unable to replace," the Finnish President said.
Stubb emphasized that Ukraine must continue "doing what it is doing," which will allow the country to withstand the aggression and win the war.
Peace negotiations on Ukraine
At the end of January and the beginning of February 2026, two rounds of talks were held in Abu Dhabi between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. According to Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, the parties discussed methods for implementing a ceasefire and monitoring the end of hostilities.
Reuters, citing sources, reported that Ukraine and the United States discussed the possibility of signing a peace agreement with Russia as early as March this year. However, the timeline could shift because territorial issues have not yet been resolved.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the United States has proposed that the parties end the war by the start of summer. He suggested that the Americans would apply diplomatic pressure to meet this schedule.
Zelenskyy also stressed that Kyiv is ready for negotiations at any location if it brings real results.
