Science says herbal infusions are not actually tea, since they do not contain leaves from the tea plant. Instead, they are known as tisanes—brews made from dried flowers, spices, fruits, or roots. The Daily Mail explains which of these drinks can help you get a good night's sleep.
Secret to deep sleep and steady nerves
The undisputed leader among evening drinks remains chamomile. Its secret lies in its high apigenin content—a unique compound that directly interacts with brain receptors responsible for relaxation and sleep regulation. Although chamomile is not a clinical sleep aid, it sends a clear signal to the nervous system that it's time to slow down. Experts recommend making a cup of chamomile part of your evening routine.
African rooibos is another effective choice for evening relaxation. Besides being completely caffeine-free, this drink may also benefit blood vessel health.
Modern studies suggest that drinking rooibos regularly for several weeks may reduce levels of bad cholesterol by nearly 10% and significantly lower oxidative stress in cells.
Fast relief for digestion
When it comes to stomach issues, peppermint, ginger, and fennel come to the rescue. Peppermint contains menthol, which acts as a powerful natural muscle relaxant. Drinking after a heavy meal can help ease gastrointestinal spasms and reduce bloating. Its aroma may also help refresh the mind during periods of mental fatigue.
For nausea and morning stomach discomfort, ginger root is considered an ideal option. Thanks to active compounds called gingerols, this spicy drink not only supports digestion but, according to some studies, may also help regulate blood sugar levels. Fennel seeds offer a similar calming effect and have been used for centuries to ease stomach heaviness due to a compound called anethole.
Hidden risks, anti-inflammatory shield
Berry infusions and rosehip tea are a great alternative to sugary soft drinks. They help keep the body hydrated and provide vitamin C, which is essential for collagen production and immune support. Turmeric drinks are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Their main active ingredient, curcumin, may help the body cope with everyday stress, although it is often recommended to combine it with black pepper to improve absorption.
However, licorice—despite its popularity—should be consumed with caution. While licorice root can soothe throat irritation and has antibacterial properties, it is also one of the most pharmacologically active herbal infusions.
Regular consumption of licorice tea may disrupt potassium balance and trigger dangerous spikes in blood pressure. Doctors strongly recommend drinking it only occasionally.
As for classic black tea, experts have largely restored its reputation: consumed in moderation, it may encourage the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, improve blood vessel function, and support heart health.
