Strategic goal: Zelenskyy confident Ukraine will join EU within five years
Ukraine could achieve European Union membership during the term of the new European Commission, which will last for five years, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy notes on X.
The head of state welcomed the European Parliament's approval of the new composition of the European Commission, led by President Ursula von der Leyen.
Zelenskyy wished the new European Commission success in strengthening a united Europe and enhancing the EU’s role as a global leader. He expressed hope for continued cooperation on critical issues related to Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Additionally, Zelenskyy voiced confidence that Ukraine would join the EU within five years of this new European Commission's tenure.
"We are confident that during the work of this European Commission, Ukraine will achieve its strategic goal—membership in the European Union," the Ukrainian president emphasized.
The new European Commission
Following the European elections, the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission. This marks her second term in office.
In September, von der Leyen introduced the new composition of the Commission, which includes 26 commissioners. Each EU member state, except Germany, nominated one representative. Germany is represented by von der Leyen herself.
Among the key appointments, former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, a strong supporter of Ukraine, was named head of EU diplomacy. Lithuania's Andrius Kubilius was appointed Commissioner for Defense and Space, while Slovenia's Marta Kos took the role of Commissioner for Enlargement.
On Wednesday, November 27, the European Parliament approved the new European Commission, which will begin its work on December 1.
