US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that his department is not involved in any negotiations regarding Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States, Fox News reports.

According to him, the US is currently focused on a different priority - implementing new tariffs, as President Donald Trump believes that trade with Canada is unfair.

Rubio stated that this would obviously affect their relations with Canada, but they still remain neighbors.

Trump’s idea of making Canada part of the US

Recently, US President Donald Trump stated that he could use economic power to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. He also noted that he is not considering the use of military force for the hypothetical annexation of Canada.

Trump further highlighted the advantages of incorporating Canada into the US, specifically mentioning a significant reduction in taxes.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Trump’s suggestion of making Canada a new US state through economic leverage is unrealistic.
