Spain is allocating €1 billion for weapons to Ukraine in 2026. Part of these funds will be used for joint weapons production, including drones, said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on March 18 during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Madrid.
"The Spanish government and society as a whole believe that Ukraine should become part of the European Union. I would like to present new support measures from Spain. First and foremost, €1 billion in military assistance for 2026," he said.
According to Sánchez, part of the aid will be financed through the European Union’s defense instrument, the SAFE program. The funding will primarily be directed toward establishing joint production with Ukraine’s defense industry.
In addition, some equipment will be transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces by Spain’s Ministry of Defense. Overall, Sánchez noted that since 2022, Spain has provided Ukraine with €4 billion worth of weapons.
Drone production with Europe: what is known
Spain is not the only European country willing to purchase Ukrainian drones and technologies. For example, Germany is set to begin producing drones that have already been tested on the battlefield, specifically, TYTAN Interceptor UAVs.
In February, a joint Ukraine-Germany enterprise began operating in Germany, which will produce drones for the needs of both Kyiv and a NATO member state. At the same time, Ukraine is ready to cooperate with Europe and purchase European technologies.
