South Korean Army Chief of Staff General Park An-su was suspended from his duties on December 12. He was the chief commander during the martial law imposed on December 3, according to Yonhap.

According to the media outlet, Park is the latest of several military commanders to be suspended from their duties as the investigation into their involvement in Yoon's December 3 martial law imposition widens.

“Shortly after the martial law announcement, a military decree barring all political activities was issued under Park's name,” the journalists said.

During the parliamentary session, Park claimed that he learned about the introduction of martial law from a televised speech by Yoon, who announced the order, claiming that he was not responsible for drafting the document.

“He offered to resign to former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on the day the martial rule was lifted but had remained in office after Yoon rejected his offer,” the article says.

What preceded the event

Earlier, the ministry suspended six other high-ranking South Korean military officials, including the commanders of the Capital Defense Command, the Army Special Warfare Command, the Counterintelligence Command, and the Defense Intelligence Command.

Situation in South Korea

A political crisis has emerged in South Korea. It occurred after South Korean President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law in the country on December 3.

Recently, the police conducted searches in the office of South Korean President Yun Seok-yol. They took place as part of an investigation initiated by local law enforcement, despite the fact that martial law was lifted six hours later. Yoon Seok-yol apologized for imposing martial law.

Before that, on December 8, South Korean President Yun Seok-yol was notified of being suspected of treason. The reason was numerous complaints.
