A South Korean court has reissued an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol. He faces impeachment over an alleged coup attempt involving the declaration of martial law in the country, reports Reuters.

The Corruption Investigation Agency stated that investigators, who are seeking to question Yoon over accusations of organizing a coup, attempted to execute the arrest warrant.

Yoon's lawyers submitted a request to the Seoul court for an injunction to annul the warrant, but on Sunday, January 6, the court rejected it.

Yoon Suk Yeol's case

On December 3, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the Republic of Korea. The move was intended to ban opposition activities and impose media censorship.

Yoon's decision triggered a sharp political crisis and clashes between opposition supporters and the military.

The country's parliament and government decided to revoke the martial law. Yoon later lifted the martial law, which lasted just under six hours. The opposition in parliament removed the president from office and initiated impeachment proceedings.

On December 27, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea began reviewing the impeachment case against Yoon Suk Yeol.

On January 1, Seoul Western District Court issued an arrest warrant for the president.

However, the head of the investigation unit was blocked by a human chain of hundreds of presidential security service personnel and military members near the president’s residence.

The Anti-Corruption Agency appealed to the police to arrest the president.

On Tuesday, the head of the investigation unit stated that they remain determined to bring Yoon to court.
