While planning the perfect vacation in Spain, most tourists traditionally choose bustling cities such as Madrid, with its grand plazas, or Barcelona, famous for its Mediterranean beaches and Gaudí architecture. However, many travelers overlook one underrated seaside destination.

Celtic heritage, white-sand beaches, Albariño wine

Located about 600 kilometers from Madrid, the Rías Baixas region is a world apart from the Spanish better-known beach destinations. This picturesque area is made up of five coastal inlets, or rías. Instead of flamenco, you'll hear the sound of the Galician bagpipe (gaita), reflecting the region's rich Celtic heritage, which comes alive during local festivals.

Visitors are greeted by uncrowded crescent-shaped beaches with fine white sand and emerald-green waters. Charming seaside towns serve some of the freshest seafood in Spain, perfectly paired with Albariño, the celebrated local white wine known for its bright acidity and aromatic profile.

Cangas

The town of Cangas, located across the bay from Vigo, offers the perfect balance of relaxation and outdoor adventure. The area features numerous hiking trails, including the nearly 9-kilometer Roteiro de Donón, which winds through pine forests and leads to several secluded beaches.

Travelers looking for crystal-clear water and mountain scenery should visit Praia de Nerga and Praia de Barra. However, visitors should note that Praia de Barra is an officially designated clothing-optional beach.

Sanxenxo

Those who want to spend as much time as possible by the water should head to Sanxenxo, a picturesque resort town renowned for its gastronomy. Just a five-minute drive from the town center lies Praia de Areas, a gently curved beach with fine white sand and calm waters, perfect for swimming and watching the sunset.

Nearby is Praia da Lanzada, a long stretch of sand whose consistent waves have made it one of the region's top surfing destinations.

Combarro

Another gem of the region is the town of Combarro. It stands out thanks to its historic granite houses and distinctive hórreos—traditional stone granaries raised on pillars and dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

After wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, visitors eventually reach the waterfront, where these centuries-old granaries stand overlooking Praia do Padrón beach.
