Single candidate named for IMF head position
The current Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has become the only candidate for the position of IMF Managing Director for the next term, according to the IMF Executive Board statement.
“The period for submitting nominations for the position of the next Managing Director closed on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. One candidate, the current Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, has been nominated," the statement says.
The IMF added that the Executive Board will act under the procedure described in the announcement of the start of the selection process for the position of IMF head on March 13.
"The Board’s goal is to complete the selection process as soon as possible, and at the latest by end-April, 2024," the IMF noted.
Georgieva as Head of the IMF
Economist from Bulgaria, Georgieva is the second woman to lead the IMF and the first person from a developing market economy country.
Georgieva, 70, who calls herself a "diehard optimist," has witnessed significant upheavals in the global economy - from the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak just months after she took office to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
She is focused on strengthening medium-term growth prospects, which lag historical levels, addressing current issues with sovereign debt, and guiding the IMF through complex quota reform.
She played a crucial role in securing significant loans for Ukraine, helping mobilize additional funds to assist its economy in withstanding the strain of the two-year war against Russia's invasion.
Last month, we reported that European Union finance ministers supported Kristalina Georgieva for a second five-year term as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
