Sleep deprivation can cause serious health problems and impair daily life. One simple test can help you determine if you are sleep deprived, says sleep expert James Leinhardt on his TikTok page.

Details of the test

For the test, you need to take a spoon and a bowl. The expert said that the little trick should be performed during the day.

"Take your spoon and any bowl or dish that will make a loud noise," the report said.

Draw the curtains in the room so that it is pitch black. Next, lie on the bed hold the spoon over the bowl, and memorize the time when you close your eyes intending to fall asleep. When you fall asleep, your hand will relax, the spoon will fall and the noise will wake you up.

James went on to explain the point of this test, saying that if you look at the clock again, you can roughly determine how long it took you to fall asleep. This important information will help you understand if you are suffering from sleep deprivation.

"If it's less than five minutes, then you're probably really sleep-deprived. If you fall asleep after 10 minutes, you probably need more sleep, too," he said.

How much people should sleep

A healthy adult usually needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep.

Factors such as age, health, and personal circumstances affect how much sleep a person needs. In addition, some people naturally sleep more than others.

However, poor sleep habits or poor sleep hygiene, such as a lack of relaxation before bed, often cause sleep problems.

Signs that you are having trouble sleeping include:

  • having trouble falling asleep
  • Long wakefulness at night
  • wake up several times during the night
  • wake up early and can't get back to sleep
  • feel depressed or in a bad mood
  • have difficulty concentrating
