Poland has responded to the proposal by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to hold a referendum in Hungary on Ukraine's membership in the European Union, informs Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

"Hungary intends to hold a referendum on Ukraine's future membership in the European Union. And I would be curious about the results of the EU referendum on the membership of Orbán's Hungary," Sikorski wrote sarcastically.

Hungary-Poland relations

Relations between Poland and Hungary have long been friendly, particularly due to their shared Euroscepticism and conflicts with the EU over the rule of law. Warsaw and Budapest often supported each other in disputes with Brussels. However, in recent years, their relations have soured.

Poland has firmly supported Ukraine, providing both military and humanitarian aid. In contrast, Hungary, under Orbán’s leadership, has taken a pro-Russian stance, slowing sanctions against Moscow and blocking military aid to Kyiv. This has significantly strained relations between Warsaw and Budapest.

Poland is also frustrated with Orbán’s actions in the EU. For instance, his frequent blocking of decisions and attempts to negotiate with the Kremlin undermine the EU’s united stance. Meanwhile, Budapest is displeased by Poland’s growing alignment with Brussels.

Orbán’s referendum proposal

Recently, Orbán announced his intention to hold a referendum in Hungary on Ukraine's EU membership. While this vote will have no legal power, it could serve as a tool for Orbán in negotiations with Brussels.

Additionally, Orbán has blocked the EU’s efforts to allocate aid to Ukraine. Hungary became the only country to oppose the move.
