Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski claims that US President Donald Trump should have imposed sanctions on Russia instead of meeting Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska, according to The Guardian.

Speaking on Fox News, Sikorski criticized Trump's decision on Russia. He said it was "hard to believe" that Russian drones entering Polish territory could have been a mistake.

Earlier, Trump himself told reporters as he left the White House that "it could have been a mistake," repeating the phrase twice.

Sikorski stressed that Vladimir Putin's calculations need to change and that the Russian leader must be convinced he cannot conquer Ukraine "at an acceptable cost."

To achieve this, he argued, tougher sanctions must be imposed and Russia deprived of the resources to continue the war.

In a sharp rebuke of Trump's actions, Sikorski remarked, "We were supposed to have sanctions, and instead, we got Alaska. And since then, as you say, attacks have intensified."

Background

Reporters had asked Trump to comment on Russian drone incursions into Poland. The US president replied that "it could have been a mistake." He also said he was "not happy about anything having to do with that whole situation."

Poland's foreign minister was quick to respond. "No, it was not a mistake," Sikorski said flatly.

The Alaska meeting

On August 15, in Anchorage, Alaska, President Donald Trump met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss Russia's war in Ukraine.

The meeting was initially expected to pave the way for further talks, possibly even direct discussions between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, progress soon stalled.
