Signs that Russians committed war crimes in Ukraine - UN Commissioner
The United Nations has acknowledged signs that Russian occupiers committed war crimes during their full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to The Guardian.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that said there had been an "extensive failure" by Russia to protect civilians in Ukraine and that there were indications that Russian forces had committed war crimes there.
"There has been extensive failure by the Russian Federation to take adequate measures to protect civilians and protect civilian objects against the effects of their attacks,"Türk addressed the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He added that the monitoring conducted by his agency indicates "gross violations of international human rights law, serious violations of international humanitarian law, and war crimes, primarily by the forces of the Russian Federation."
Russian war crimes in Ukraine
Throughout the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian armed forces have regularly perpetrated war crimes. Several Western countries have condemned the Kremlin for these actions and pledged to hold all those involved in committing crimes accountable.
Recently, a United Nations investigative commission declared that it had found additional evidence of Russian military aggression and war crimes in Ukraine, including cases of rape and the deportation of children to Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that over 110,000 violations of laws and customs of war by Russian occupiers on Ukrainian territory have already been documented.
